Seeing a Physician

Talking with Your Doctor
The first step in seeking relief from severe fecal incontinence is discussing the issue with a healthcare professional. Your doctor will talk to you about your medical history, your diet and stool habits. It will be important that your doctor understands when and under what circumstances you experience fecal incontinence.

To diagnose this condition, your doctor will give you a physical examination, which could include all or some of the following tests:

  • Blood Test—Analyzes blood to check for levels of various hormones and other elements.
  • Rectal Examination—Your doctor will examine your rectum.
  • Manometry—Measures the pressure or tension of the anal canal while resting, squeezing and pushing.
  • Endoanal Ultrasound—Visualizes the anal canal and surrounding area by inserting a small ultrasound probe into the anus.

Your doctor may order other tests, depending on your medical condition.
