Patient Selection
No one penile prosthesis is right for all patients experiencing ED. The AMS DURA IITM is well suited for patients who:
  • Are suitable surgical candidates
  • Do not have adequate manual strength or dexterity to operate a pump for an inflatable implant
  • Do not need routine endoscopic procedures
  • Are intimidated by multi-component devices
  • Have abdominal scarring
  • Can accept the fact that the device will not provide a natural flaccid appearance
  • Are dealing with long-term incontinence and must keep a condom catheter in place

Patient Profile
Tom is a 67-year old man who had a radical prostatectomy three years ago. Since the surgery, Tom has not been able to achieve an erection. He attempted to use a vacuum device, but found it too difficult to operate. Drug therapy did not work, and Tom did not like the idea of injection therapy.

After consultation with his physician, Tom decided that an AMS non-inflatable prosthesis was the best solution, in part because he was interested in a device with fewer components. Also, Tom's physician though that the AMS non-inflatable prosthesis would suit his needs better than more complicated devices since he sustained some abdominal scarring from the prostate surgery. The fact that he did not need recurring endoscopic procedures meant there was no need to rule out the non-inflatable prosthesis on the basis its incompatibility with endoscopic procedures.

Tom is pleased with the results of his implant. He feels the absence of a normal-looking flaccid penis is outweighed by the simplicity of the prosthesis and the minimal effort it takes to operate it.

This scenario is based upon a composite of typical patient and physician experiences, and is not reflective of any one individual's medical situation. Individual situations and results may vary.
