Device Mechanics

The Spectra prosthesis consists of a pair of cylinders, each with a center malleable section of articulating polymer and metal segments. A cable extends through the center of these segments. The proximal and distal ends of the cable are each connected to a spring that is encased in a metal housing. The entire outside surface of the cylinders is made of silicone. The articulating segments, held together by the cable and spring assemblies, provide sufficient friction and rigidity for the patient to position the device for concealment or for intercourse.

The Spectra Prosthesis cylinders are available in 9.5 mm, 12 mm and 14 mm diameters. The proximal rigid section of the 9.5 mm diameter cylinder is 5 cm long. This section is 6 cm long for the 12 mm and 14 mm diameter Spectra cylinders. Each Spectra cylinder is available in 12, 16, and 20 cm lengths. The total length can be adjusted by adding rear tip extenders (RTEs) to the proximal end of each cylinder. A range of RTE lengths is available and can extend the cylinder length from 0.5 cm to 7.5 cm for a total prosthesis length of up to 27.5 cm.
