The UroLume® Urethral Stent is used to relieve urinary obstructions secondary to detrusor external sphincter dyssynergia (DESD), recurrent bulbar urethral strictures or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In this section, we will cover its use as solution for treating DESD.
For details about its other applications, click here for BPH or here for Strictures
Features UroLume is a braided mesh cylinder made of high strength, impact grade, super alloy wire. It has the potential to expand to a diameter of 14 mm (42F) and is available in lengths of 1.5 cm, 2.0 cm, 2.5 cm and 3.0 cm (also available in 3.5 and 4.0 length in international markets).
The braided mesh is designed to expand radially, applying constant gentle pressure to hold open the sections of the urethra that obstruct the flow or urine. The open, diamond-shape cell design of the stent allows the stent to eventually become embedded in the urethra, thus minimizing the risk for encrustation and migration.
UroLume is provided preloaded in a sterile, disposable delivery instrument. The outer diameter of the tool is 22F along the shaft and 24F at the tapered tip. The delivery instrument provides:
- Secure housing for the stent to allow for transurethral placement
- Direct visualization of the stent and the urethra throughout the procedure
- The ability for you to deploy the stent accurately within the urethra
Benefits UroLume offers a number of benefits for your patients with DESD:
- The only FDA-approved long-term treatment alternative to sphincterotomy
- The only potentially reversible treatment alternative
- Minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in an outpatient setting with local anesthesia
- 5 years of follow-up from multicenter clinical trials shows significant reduction in autonomic dysreflexia, hydronephrosis and usage of indwelling catheters.
