Some physicians recommend that the following conditions be met before treating stress urinary incontinence with the AMS 800:
- Incontinence has been present for at least 6 months
- The patient is motivated to use the device
- The patient has adequate manual dexterity and mental acuity to operate the pump
- The patient's urine is sterile
- The patient has a bladder capacity of at least 200cc
- The patient is able to empty his bladder completely
- The patient has a urine flow rate greater than 10 mL/second
The device is contraindicated in patients:
- Who are poor candidates for surgical procedures and/or anesthesia due to physical or mental conditions
- With chronic urinary tract infections
- With urinary incontinence due to or complicated by an irreversibly obstructed lower urinary tract
- With irresolvable detrusor hyperreflexia or bladder instability
