Placement & Function

The cuff of the AMS 800 occludes the urethra, preventing urine from passing.

  • When the patient wants to void, he simply squeezes and releases the control pump until the cuff is empty.
  • This transfers the fluid from the cuff to the pressure regulating balloon. The cuff opens, allowing the urine to flow through the urethra.
  • Within a few minutes after urinating, the fluid automatically flows from the balloon back to the cuff. When the cuff is full, it once again occludes the urethra and the patient is continent.
  • Patients with severe incontinence may have two cuffs implanted around the urethra. Both cuffs are connected to the pump using a 3-way "Y" connector included in the accessory kit.
