Placement & Function
The ActiconŽ prosthesis can be implanted in both men and women with the pressure regulating balloon placed in the prevesical space, the cuff implanted around a segment of the anal canal, and the pump positioned in either the scrotum or the labium.
To defecate, the patient squeezes and releases the lower, soft part of the pump several times. This causes the fluid to move out of the cuff and into the pressure regulating balloon. As the fluid leaves the cuff, the cuff and anal canal open. Stool can then pass through the anal canal and out of the body.
After several minutes, fluid automatically returns from the balloon to the cuff. As the cuff refills, it squeezes the anal canal closed.
