The Procedure

The TherMatrx® procedure itself takes approximately 40 - 60 minutes depending on protocol selection. Almost any exam room in your office will be adequate - an operating room is not required.

Patient Preparation

  • Patients should be advised to apply a Fleet™ enema at least two to three hours prior to treatment
  • A mild oral sedative, analgesic and antispasmodic medication should be taken approximately 45 minutes prior to treatment

During the Procedure

The treatment is fully automated by the TherMatrx console, which will shut itself down when treatment is completed.

  • Insert the treatment catheter and rectal probe
  • Inflate catheter balloon with 5 cc sterile water, connect urine drainage bag and apply light traction on the catheter by securing the bag to the patient's leg
  • Place temperature sensors and connect the microwave cable
  • Press START
  • At 44 C and again at 50 C, you will perform a simple "sensor mapping" procedure to ensure the patient is receiving an optimal treatment. To do this, you simply move the temperature sensors along the catheter length and "lock in" at the hottest point.

    Post-Treatment Care

Once treatment is complete, the treatment catheter is removed and a standard drainage catheter may be placed for 2-5 days.1 Bladder spasms, mild hematuria and/or dysuria are normal and expected short-term, post-treatment symptoms.

Typically patients will see improvement in their BPH symptoms in 6-8 weeks. 1
